Anthony Cooperwood
Music has taken Anthony Cooperwood all over the world. From a 20-piece swing-jazz big band at the U. S. Embassy in Moscow, an R&B band in Hong Kong, a Reggae band touring throughout Canada, or on solo piano, Anthony has performed in a variety of musical environments. “I’ve even played upright bass in a Haitian jazz ensemble,” he says.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri Anthony has spent the last 35 years performing music and entertaining people all over the world. In 1989 he won the Piano Fellowship Competition and received a 4-year full-ride scholarship to Truman State University. After earning 2 Bachelors Degrees in music and piano performance as well as a Masters Degree in Education he moved to New York City to begin his career there as a professional musician.
After 5 years on the music scene in New York, Anthony auditioned for and joined Cirque du Soleil. For almost 10 years he served as Keyboardist/Bass Guitarist/Backup Conductor for it’s Dralion show. While touring 5 years in North America, and 3-years in Europe including 2 seasons in London’s Royal Albert Hall, Anthony performed in over 2500 shows. His career has made him a solid performer and bandleader well-rounded in every aspect of the entertainment industry. He’s had multiple appearances on The Tonight Show in Los Angeles with Jay Leno and Musique Plus (Canadian MTV) in Montreal as well as a number of programs worldwide like Telemundo in Mexico City, Mexico and TV5 in Paris, France. He is now occasionally contracted with Royal Caribbean Cruises where he has so far served on the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and Oceana cruise ships.
Not only is Anthony comfortable with the fast-paced ever-changing venue of live theater, he now specializes in music education. He has taught music in elementary school to Grades K-6 as well as high school. Anthony is currently a tenured member of staff at Montreal’s Rosemount High School where he is Director of Bands. He says, “It is now my pleasure to share the wealth of musical experience I have with younger students. I want to ignite that same passion in music in them that has been so good to me.” He has also lectured to other teachers during academic sessions at two of the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers (QPAT) teachers’ conferences.
Anthony has performed as a representative for Steinway & Sons pianos. Further collaborations and endorsement partnerships have included Roland, Korg Canada, MTD Basses, N/S Design, The Chapman Stick, Dean Markley Strings, and Montreal’s own Pianos Prestige.
